The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on Thursday inaugurated the latest and enhanced infrastructure at the General Santos International Airport (GSIA), which stands as the largest airport in Mindanao.
The event signifies the bureau’s dedication to updating and improving air travel, as it unveils the official opening of the airport’s boarding bridges and the second level of the passenger terminal building (PTB).
The newly launched boarding bridges allow for seamless passenger transition from the terminal to the aircraft, while the enlarged upper level offers additional lounge area for departing passengers.
Six new food and souvenir shops have been established on the second floor to meet the needs of waiting passengers. This not only supports the growth of small businesses but also helps locals in promoting their products.
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, CAAP Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo, General Santos Councilor Jose Orlando Acharon, Sarangani Province Vice Governor Elmer De Peralta, as well as airline executives were present at the launch.
“As we officially open to the pubic these improvements at General Santos International Airport, we thank the local government unit of Gensan, the GSIA airport community, and our stakeholders for their support in our work in pursuit of providing the country with a safe, accessible, and comfortable air travel experience,” Tamayo said.
According to the CAAP, these upgrades are expected to contribute to the airport’s growth by attracting more airlines and passengers, ultimately improving connectivity.
